Dedicated Cloud Gateway upgrades
The latest major, minor, and patch versions are made available to you after the Dedicated Cloud Gateway team has tested them. This is why a new version is sometimes available in Konnect before it’s available for Dedicated Cloud Gateway data plane nodes. All control planes are automatically updated to the latest version after it’s available in Konnect.
Dedicated Cloud Gateways use the following upgrade pattern for data plane nodes:
- Major and minor releases: Customers are responsible for upgrading their data planes to minor releases following Kong’s upgrade guidance.
- Patch releases: Kong upgrades your Dedicated Cloud Gateway data plane nodes for you when a new patch is released.
Kong Mesh compatibility
To use Mesh in Konnect, you must use a compatible version of Kong Mesh:
| Kong Mesh version | Supported? | First supported patch |
|---|---|---|
| 2.4.x or later | Supported | 2.4.1 |
| 2.3.x or earlier | Not supported | - |
decK version compatibility
Konnect requires decK v1.40.0 or above.
Versions below this will see inconsistent deck gateway diff results and other potential issues.

Plugin compatibility
Most Kong Gateway plugins are compatible with Konnect. See the Kong Plugin Hub for all compatible plugins.
Considerations for Dedicated Cloud Gateways
There are some limitations for plugins with Dedicated Cloud Gateways:
- Any plugins that depend on a local agent will not work with Dedicated Cloud Gateways.
- Any plugins that depend on the Status API or on Admin API endpoints will not work.
- Any plugins or functionality that depend on the AWS IAM
AssumeRolemust be configured differently. This includes Data Plane Resilience.
FAQs
Are the Konnect control plane and associated database migrations or upgrades done by Kong Inc.?
The Kong Gateway control plane and its dependencies are fully managed by Konnect. As new versions of Kong Gateway are released, Konnect supports them as long as they are under our active support schedule.
Will Konnect control plane upgrades always show incompatible messages on the API Gateway page in Konnect if the data plane nodes are not the same version as the Konnect control plane?
An old configuration may still be 100% compatible with older data plane nodes and therefore not show any error messages in the Konnect UI. If Konnect detects compatibility issues when pushing the payload to the data plane, the UI displays them.
Will new features be available if the Konnect control plane detects incompatible data plane nodes?
New features will not be available for use or consumption on incompatible data plane nodes. You will see new features available in the Konnect UI regardless of the data plane that is connected to the control plane in Konnect. However, when the control plane pushes an update payload to an incompatible data plane, the data plane automatically rejects the update.
A version compatibility layer checks the payload before the control plane sends the update to the data plane. If the compatibility layer finds concerns with the payload, it adds metadata to the node. Konnect uses that metadata to display incompatibility warnings or errors in the UI.
For example, let’s say a parameter is introduced with a new version of a plugin and is available in the Konnect UI. The data plane, however, is running an older version of Kong Gateway and doesn’t support the new parameter. If that parameter isn’t configured, or is assigned the default value, then Konnect adds no warning or incompatibility metadata to the node, and no warnings or errors appear.
Can I continue to use older versions of configurations as the Konnect control plane auto-upgrades?
Yes. All decK dumps, or YAML configurations, will continue to work in Konnect after they are synced.
Are there any disruptions if I choose not to upgrade my data plane nodes?
There is no disruption at all if you choose not to upgrade your data plane nodes as long as the version of the data plane is under our Kong Gateway active support timeline.
How can I create a support case in Konnect?
If you’re an org admin with an Enterprise account and a Kong Support portal account, you can create a support case in Konnect by navigating to the ? icon on the top right menu and clicking Create support case.
This opens a pop-up dialog where you can enter your case type, description, and the related Konnect entity.
You can see your support cases in the Kong Support portal.
If you don’t have a Kong Support portal account, request access from your org admin or reach out to a Kong representative for an invite.
